Three ways to live alone
A single person pays the whole rent. There is no partner to share a spare bedroom, wifi connection or pool maintenance, so choosing the home matters more than saving a little on coffee.
The room model assumes simple meals and limited paid leisure. The house model keeps that lifestyle but allows more for utilities. The villa model also increases food, activities and the insurance allowance. The totals compare complete plans rather than pretending that a more expensive home is the only thing that changes.
| Per month | One person, room | One person, one-bedroom house | One person, one-bedroom villa |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rent, observed median | Rp 7.9M / $440 | Rp 11M / $610 | Rp 18.5M / $1,030 |
| Food and drinks | Rp 4M / $220 | Rp 4M / $220 | Rp 6M / $340 |
| Transport | Rp 1.2M / $70 | Rp 1.2M / $70 | Rp 1.5M / $80 |
| Utilities, internet and phone | Rp 0.5M / $30 | Rp 1.5M / $80 | Rp 2M / $110 |
| Leisure and coworking | Rp 1M / $60 | Rp 1M / $60 | Rp 3M / $170 |
| Visa and insurance allowance | Rp 2M / $110 | Rp 2M / $110 | Rp 3M / $170 |
| Monthly contingency | Rp 1M / $60 | Rp 1M / $60 | Rp 2M / $110 |
| Total per month | Rp 17.6M / $980 | Rp 21.7M / $1,210 | Rp 36M / $2,010 |
These are one-person budgets. The visa and insurance lines are reserves to replace with personal quotes. Utility costs depend on the contract. The room plan assumes most bills are included, while a private home needs a larger allowance.

What the rental data says about living alone
The sample was updated 26 October 2026. We separate property types because a one-bedroom house and a one-bedroom villa are different housing searches.
| Home | Monthly median asking rent | Approximate USD | Priced monthly listings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private room | Rp 7.9M | $440 | 98 |
| One-bedroom house | Rp 11M | $610 | 25 |
| One-bedroom villa | Rp 18.5M | $1,030 | 114 |
A room can be in a guesthouse or a shared property. Check the listing for kitchen access, bathroom arrangements and the pool. A villa label does not guarantee a private pool. These classifications come from the published offer and are starting points for your inspection.
The medians describe different groups of homes. They do not measure the cost of adding a pool to an otherwise identical house. For the wider breakdown by location, use the Bali rent index.
A room gives you the lowest recurring commitment
A private room suits a first month alone if you want to test an area without maintaining a whole home. Ask whether you can cook, take calls and stay at the published rate for several months.
A furnished room with reliable wifi can be more useful than a larger place with nowhere to work. If you need a separate workspace, price it before signing. Our modest leisure line does not assume unlimited coworking access.
At a fixed $1,000 ceiling, the median room leaves little spare cash in our model. The $1,000 budget test therefore starts below the median and counts how many listings fit.
A house buys privacy without the villa assumption
The one-bedroom house model is for someone who wants their own living space while keeping daily spending modest. Confirm furnishings and internet. A lower advertised rent is less useful if you must buy furniture or arrange every service yourself.
If you plan to work at home, visit during your working hours. Test the connection, phone reception and noise with the doors closed. A bedroom is not automatically a usable office.
A villa needs a budget for the rest of the lifestyle
The one-bedroom villa median is Rp 18.5M. With the allowances in our model, the total is Rp 36M. A private villa can fit a solo $2,000 budget, but expensive furnishings and a pool should not consume money reserved for bills and insurance.
Use the $2,000 rent test to check an actual quote. If you need a second bedroom for work or visitors, compare it separately rather than adding a token amount to the one-bedroom rent.
The costs you cannot share
Rent, internet and cleaning are usually household costs. Food, personal insurance, visa fees, gym memberships and coworking passes generally remain individual costs. That is why a solo budget is higher per person than a couple’s budget for the same home.
Sharing can reduce the housing bill, but confirm the rules about tenants, deposits and bills before moving into a shared villa. If you are moving with a partner, use the couple cost comparison rather than doubling this page’s total.
Before committing to a full year
Keep savings for travel, a deposit and temporary accommodation while you inspect homes. A yearly lease may lower the monthly equivalent while requiring a much larger transfer upfront. The one-year living budget shows both.
These rents are asking prices from All Bali Rentals, with at least three monthly prices required for a median. Unpriced rentals and yearly-only offers are excluded. Other spending is estimated, and USD values use Rp 17,900 per dollar. The sample is useful for a housing search, not a census of what all single residents spend.
