One year in Bali, annual spending and the cash due upfront

A full-year Bali budget using real rents: solo and couple spending, monthly versus annual contracts, refundable deposits and money needed on arrival.

For a full year, Our plans come to about $11,770 for one adult in a room, $24,130 for one adult in a one-bedroom villa, or $38,880 for a couple in a two-bedroom villa rented monthly. Add travel, setup costs and an emergency fund. An annual lease changes both the rent and how much cash you need before moving in.

Twelve months of ordinary spending

These totals multiply our monthly plans by twelve. Rent uses the median for each home type in the snapshot updated 26 October 2026. Food, transport, bills, leisure, visa and insurance reserves, and monthly contingency are estimated allowances.

Living plan Per month Twelve months in IDR Twelve months in USD
One person in a room Rp 17.6M Rp 210.6M $11,770
One person in a one-bedroom villa Rp 36M Rp 432M $24,130
Couple in a two-bedroom villa Rp 58M Rp 696M $38,880

The couple row is a household total for two adults. None of these plans includes children, international school or car ownership. They also exclude flights, deposits, setup purchases and major emergencies.

The single-person comparison and the couple budget show the monthly lines behind these totals. Use the main cost-of-living guide for the wider spending categories.

Monthly rent versus a yearly contract

An annual living budget does not require an annual rental contract. You can pay monthly for twelve months, or sign a yearly lease that may need payment upfront.

For two-bedroom villas, our 311 published monthly prices have a median of Rp 30M. Our 223 explicit annual quotes have a median of Rp 250M, equivalent to Rp 20.8M per month. Annual quotes include monthly listings that also publish a yearly price, counted once per home.

Two-bedroom villa rent Twelve-month amount
Twelve payments at the monthly median Rp 360M
One contract at the yearly median Rp 250M

Those medians come from different homes. Their difference is not a discount you can expect from an owner. Compare both quotes for the same property, with the same services included. The yearly villa rental guide focuses on contract prices and matched monthly/yearly offers.

Add the services you take over

A lower annual rent may leave you paying for services that a monthly quote includes. For our couple example, replace the Rp 2.5M utilities allowance with this estimated package of running costs.

Running cost Monthly allowance
Electricity and water Rp 2.5M
Internet and phone Rp 0.5M
Pool and garden Rp 1.5M
Cleaning Rp 2M
Total Rp 6.5M

Keep the couple’s other allowances the same. The annual-lease model then totals Rp 634M, about $35,420, for two adults. This includes rent, routine spending and contingency, but still excludes arrival costs and the deposit.

These are illustrative services, not bills observed across the rental sample. A house without a pool needs a different plan. A contract that includes cleaning needs that cost removed. Ask for recent bills and a written list of who pays for repairs.

Spending is different from cash needed upfront

A refundable deposit ties up money without necessarily becoming a cost. Annual rent is a cost paid early. You need enough cash for both before you can benefit from a lower monthly equivalent.

For a median-priced two-bedroom annual villa, assume full-year payment and an illustrative deposit equal to two months of the annual rent’s monthly equivalent. This is a scenario, not a measured deposit policy.

Cash at signing Amount
Annual rent Rp 250M
Illustrative refundable deposit Rp 41.7M
Rent plus deposit Rp 291.7M, about $16,290

The signing amount is part of your cash plan, not an extra amount to add to the annual total in full. Rent is already included in annual spending. Add the deposit only when working out money you need accessible, and count it as a final cost only if it is not returned.

Build your arrival budget separately

Get quotes for these items before you move.

  • Flights, luggage and any trip home during the year.
  • Temporary accommodation while you inspect rentals.
  • The deposit requested in the actual contract.
  • Initial permit payments, with later renewals placed in the months they fall due.
  • Furniture or work equipment that the home does not include.
  • An emergency reserve for medical excesses, urgent travel or an early move.

If a permit fee is already covered by the monthly reserve, do not add it again as a full annual cost. The issue is its timing. The moving-to-Bali guide helps with the arrival sequence.

Does $24,000 cover one year?

$24,000 means $2,000 for each of twelve months. It is close to our solo villa recurring budget. It does not mean you can arrive with exactly $24,000, pay a deposit and flights, and keep the same spending plan for the whole year.

Use the $2,000 monthly test for rent quotes and spending limits. If you are planning in INR, the rupee budget guide provides a dated direct conversion from rupiah.

Confirm the right to stay for the year

A twelve-month rental agreement does not grant a twelve-month stay permission. Before paying, confirm the route appropriate to your nationality, work situation and intended activities. Check current conditions through Indonesian Immigration and the long-stay visa guide.

The visa reserve in a budget is not proof of eligibility. Nor does a cheaper room remove the need to plan the legal stay.

Data and limits

All Bali Rentals collects published asking rents and merges reposts. Monthly figures use explicit monthly prices. Annual figures use explicit yearly prices, including dual monthly/yearly quotes, and exclude multi-year leaseholds. A median needs at least three prices. The source mix is weighted toward advertised homes for foreign renters, not every tenancy in Bali.

Spending and running costs are editorial allowances. USD conversions use Rp 17,900 per dollar. Use actual contract terms, current exchange rates and personal insurance quotes to turn the model into your own annual budget.
